The Australian South Sea Islander (ASSI) community has continued to experience social and economic disadvantage following their official recognition as a distinct cultural group.

In 2024, as a step towards establishing an evidence base which identifies strengths, opportunities, and areas of disadvantage within the Queensland ASSI community, Multicultural Affairs Queensland (MAQ) co-designed a research project with the Queensland United Australian South Sea Islander Council (QUASSIC), and conducted by James Cook University.
