Mungalla Station: A legacy for generations to come

Jacob Cassady - Mungalla

A deep connection to Country

For more than 60,000 years, the Nywaigi people have lived on and cared for their traditional lands in North Queensland near Ingham. Rich in wildlife, rainforest resources and seafood from the nearby Great Barrier Reef, Nywaigi people thrived in what was known as a "land of plenty", living in harmony with Country through the guidance of an ancient, complex system of cultural laws, values and responsibilities.

Today, that connection to Country continues through the work of the Mungalla Aboriginal Business Corporation and the Nywaigi Aboriginal Land Corporation. Together, they're creating economic, social and cultural opportunities for their community while sharing the rich history of Mungalla Station with visitors from across Australia and around the world.

A story of resilience and return

Mungalla Aboriginal Tours tell a story of resilience, survival and self-determination. After more than a century of European ownership and the forced removal of many Nywaigi people from their ancestral lands, ownership of Mungalla returned to the Nywaigi people in 1999.

Today, the 880-hectare property is owned and managed for the benefit of the community and future generations.

Managing Director Jacob Cassady says Mungalla's success is grounded in the enduring strength of Nywaigi culture.

"Mungalla is more than a tourism business. It is a way for us to share our culture, tell our history in our own voice, and create opportunities for our people while caring for Country."

Sharing culture through tourism

Through cultural tourism experiences, visitors gain a deeper understanding of Nywaigi culture, the station's unique history and the connection between people and Country.

The business not only preserves cultural knowledge but also creates employment, economic participation and pathways for future generations.

Building a stronger future

For Jacob, Indigenous business and Mungalla Aboriginal Tours is about creating a lasting legacy.

"Every visitor who comes to Mungalla leaves with a greater appreciation of our history and culture. At the same time, every tour helps build a stronger future for our community and our children."

As Australia celebrates Indigenous Business Month, Mungalla Station stands as an example of how Indigenous-led enterprises are driving economic development while maintaining cultural integrity.

Culture and business growing side by side

Guided by the vision of the Nywaigi Traditional Owners, the business continues to foster Aboriginal cultural values while creating sustainable opportunities through the careful use of Country.

"Indigenous businesses bring together thousands of years of knowledge, culture and innovation. At Mungalla, we're proud to demonstrate that culture and business can grow side by side."

Through culture, Country and enterprise, Mungalla Station is helping ensure that the legacy of the Nywaigi people continues to thrive for generations to come.
