Yura Tours: Sharing Quandamooka culture through connection to Country

Elisha Kissick Yura Tours

For Elisha Kissick, founder of Yura Tours, tourism is about sharing the stories, culture and knowledge of her ancestors while creating meaningful connections to Country. A proud Quandamooka woman from Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island), Elisha started the business to continue the stories of her Elders, educate visitors about her culture and show her children that it is possible to build a sustainable business on Country.

Through walking and driving cultural tours, Yura Tours welcomes visitors to experience the rich cultural heritage of Quandamooka Country. Guests learn about traditional foods, creation stories, and the deep connections between land, sea and culture that have shaped Quandamooka life for thousands of years.

"My experiences connect people to the land they are on through stories, food and culture," Elisha said. "I know after the experience they will have a better understanding of our people and a greater appreciation for the land they walk on".

Since launching five years ago, Yura Tours has become trade-ready, joined Tourism Australia's Discover Aboriginal Experiences collective, and gained recognition in national and international publications including Forbes, Lonely Planet and Qantas Magazine. However, Elisha says her proudest achievement is showing her daughters that hard work can create opportunities.

As a registered supplier with Supply Nation and Discover Aboriginal Experiences, Yura Tours is helping showcase the strength and diversity of Queensland's Indigenous business sector. For Elisha, Indigenous Business Month is an important opportunity to highlight the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses and inspire the next generation to dream big.
